Mooring System Transformation for the OOS Independencia II
Gulf Copper Energy Services (GCES) recently completed a major upgrade, installing a taut leg, eight-winch, mid-water mooring system on the OOS-managed semi-submersible drilling rig Independencia II.
This project included the installation of 160 tons of prefabricated steel and significant structural enhancements, showcasing Gulf Copper Energy Services’s (GCES) commitment to delivering complex structural repairs or upgrades in remote geographical locations away from our core shipyards.
Starting in September 2024, our team fabricated components at our Galveston shipyard, requiring approximately 20,000 man-hours of precise welding and assembly. The logistics involved 31 truck shipments from Galveston, TX to Fort Lauderdale, FL, and 13 sea freight voyages to Curacao.
Onboard the rig, a team of up to 65 professionals, led by Shaun Flower (Project Manager) and Emilio Guzman (Project Supervisor), worked diligently, overseeing approximately 70,000 man-hours to install the new structural steel and system, which included eight each fairleads & winches with operator cabins on each column.
The project is a testament to our team’s expertise and adaptability. Client feedback praised the professionalism, safety record, and the crew’s willingness to go the extra mile. OOS representatives highlighted the excellent quality of work and the strong leadership of Shaun and Emilio.
The OOS-managed Independencia II is now equipped for enhanced station keeping during mid-water drilling operations, thanks to the dedication and skill of the GCES team. This project reinforces our commitment to providing innovative and efficient solutions for the maritime energy sector.
